[Ann] Locking of the "Feature Requests" forum

Hi all,

in the next days we intend to lock the "Feature Requests" forum, since it has been superseded by the roadmap long ago,
and having to answer in several places takes extra time and keeps me away from fixing bugs and implementing
features in CN.

Before it was not possible because UserEcho didn't support attaching images, but now it supports everything,
so I think that having just one place to discuss feature ideas will be a good thing.
The "Bug reports" forum will likely follow suit some time afterwards.
But of course the main discussion forum isn't going anywhere.

If however you'd like the forum to stay unlocked, please speak your mind!
Thank you!

I have mixed feelings with this. Having one place only to discuss features is a good thing. BUT, userecho is a pain in many ways. It is slow, especially on smartphones and tablets. Discussions lack of clarity. It is harder to follow and answer.

Sometimes i prefer the forum to discuss an idea. After understanding the idea better, i post it as a request to the roadmap. The roadmap is a bad place to start discussions. It is good only, when you already know, what the suggestion should look like.

I'd rather prefer droping userecho, if only the forum would support voting.

Some drawbacks of userecho:

  • Ctrl+Tab and Ctrl+L block browser shortcuts in Firefox and IE. This can be very annoying.
  • Quoting is not supported, respectively as a formatting option only.
  • ESC can cancel edit dialogs without warning, thus leading to dataloss.
  • drafts can not be previewed
  • drafts can not be saved

Sometimes the result of a discussion leads to a conclusion, that can be pretty different to the original request. The problem is, people only reading the root of the request vote on something they won't get. It can also lead to situations, when people don't vote, but would do so, if only the root would reflect the true summary of the thread.

I have just finished writing a comment on the roadmap with my iPad. After saving i noticed a spelling error and wanted to edit the comment. No way i can handle the job. The ui does not support touch devices. When i touch the comment, the edit button will be shown, but there is no way to actually click it.

Alex, i agree the job of supporting one board only is appealing. On the other hand, userecho is not ready to achieve this goal in all respects.

Userecho does not show the number of views, which i personally find an interesting matter.

Thanks, Thomas! I think your arguments are valid.
I'll add a poll to this topic to see what other users think on the matter.

Seems people are not especially interested in the issue :)
But I've decided to keep the forum running for a while.
Thomas, thanks again for your valuable input!

Maybe userecho can be improved. I started with this simple request: http://feedback.userecho.com/topic/1597 ... t-be-used/
Maybe you want to vote for it.

Hi Alex,

could "Stackoverflow/Stackexchange" be an alternative to userecho?

Interesting idea! But Stackoverflow and Stackexchange is Q&A, why do you think it will
be good for roadmap? As far as I can tell, there's only one type of "ticket" there: a question.
There's no distinction between idea, bug and question. Also there are no statuses except
"open" and "closed", which is clearly not enough. (Of course this could be emulated with tags,
but wouldn't it be too "hackish"?) Non-geek and non-it audience won't understand I'm afraid.
